Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser Review

Overview Of My Skin

Being a sufferer of hormonal acne from my early teens, my skin texture has changed a lot and is still changing. I have a combination skin with mild to severe acne flare-ups every now and then. Due to this, my skin almost always looks red due to inflamed acne.

Depending on the weather condition, my skin changes its texture. Sometimes, my skin is oily and sometimes, I see dry patches on my cheeks even after applying heavy moisturizers. Makeup products only make it worse.

Hence, I avoid using any product on my skin and try to stick with natural home made DIY skincare products.

5 Turmeric Face Mask Benefits | DIY and How to Use

How to Use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser?

  1. This cleanser can be used morning and night as it can gently cleanse your skin without clogging pores
  2. If you are using heavy makeup, make sure to remove it using a makeup remover and then cleanse using the Cetaphil gentle cleanser

Ingredients

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser Ingredients Explained

1. Cetyl alcohol

  • Comedogenic rating: 2/5 meaning it will not clog pores
  • Uses: It is a non-drying type of alcohol that helps in thickening the product
  • Origin: Can be made of either animal or plant.
  • Toxicity: Safe to use in cosmetic products

2. Propylene Glycol

  • Comedogenic rating: 0/5 meaning it will not clog pores
  • Uses: It is a solvent and a humectant. It can increase moisture retention in the skin
  • Origin: Can be derived from petroleum, natural gases, or vegetable sources
  • Toxicity: Safe to use in cosmetic products

3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

  • Comedogenic rating: 0/5 meaning it will not clog pores
  • Uses: Cleansing agent which produces lather. Can be an irritant to the skin but if mixed with other mild ingredients its irritant property reduces
  • Origin: Can be derived from petroleum, or from coconut or palm oil
  • Toxicity: highly debated chemical. SLS is an irritant but not a cancer-causing agent according to EWG.

4. Stearyl Alcohol

  • Comedogenic rating: 2/5 meaning it will not clog pores
  • Uses: It is a natural fatty alcohol that acts as an emollient to soften skin and helps to combine water and oil giving the product a smooth consistency
  • Origin: Can be derived from coconut and palm kernel oil
  • Toxicity: Minimal eye irritant. Safe to use in cosmetic products.

5. Methyl/Butyl/Propyl Paraben

  • Comedogenic rating: 0/5 meaning it will not clog pores
  • Uses: Used as a preservative to prolong shelf life and prevent fungus growth
  • Origin: Occurs naturally in fruits particularly blueberries
  • Toxicity: Highly debated chemical. The EWG lists methylparaben‘s toxicity at 0 percent whilst safecosmetics.org lists it as not safe. It can cause skin cancer if it is accumulated in large amounts which happens over a period of time.

Know the top 5 toxic chemicals that you need to avoid in your skincare below!

Top 5 Most Toxic ingredients to avoid in Skincare

Texture

It has a creamy and translucent texture. Doesn’t foam when mixed with water.

Fragrance

Fragrance-free. I personally didn’t like the chemical smell

My Experience

  • My dry skin feels super hydrated and soft after cleansing
  • My acne didn’t feel irritated or inflamed like it does with other cleansers I have used
  • Since it doesn’t foam at all, make sure to remove heavy makeup using a makeup cleanser before cleansing your skin with Cetaphil Gentle skin cleanser
  • It did a good job in removing light makeup. Check the video below to see the proof!
  • The face wash is slightly acidic in nature (ph 6.3-6.8), which is well suited for the skin (ph 4.7)
  • It didn’t really help in getting rid of my acne which is obvious because the ingredients are gentle and don’t have acne clearing ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For curing acne, the root cause must be first addressed. Acne may be caused due to hormones and lifestyle too! This cleanser cannot help combat that!
