7 Easy Professional Facial Steps at Home

Your Own Salon-Like Facial

While lives have become hectic, it doesn’t mean you need to give up on your beauty time! Who said facials can only be done at a beauty salon? You can achieve the same facial glow and the spa-feel experience right at the comforts of your home.

Sure, you may not be able to completely copy the movements and strokes like your favorite facialist, but, you can attain the much-desired smoothness and glow by re-creating the facial experience at home!

So, why burn a hole in your purse when you can actually do a facial at home?

Without any further ado, let us get started.

But before that, pull your hair behind away from your face, and put on your hairband to avoid any hair strands falling over your face and ruining the whole facial experience!

Perfect Facial Spa at Home – A Step by Step Tutorial

Facial Step 1 : Double Cleanse your Face

Cleansing is one of the most important steps in any skincare regime. This will help in maximizing the next steps. The main use of a cleanser is for removing all the dirt, oil, and dead skin cells from your skin.

Top5listicle recommends starting with milk or an oil-based cleanser.

Tips to cleanse face the right way

  1. Wet your face and start by applying a little oil cleanser on the chin going upwards in small circular motions
  2. Gently massage in the cleanser using your two fingers applying little pressure
  3. Wash it off with warm water
  4. Next, choose either foam or milk-based cleanser. The creamy texture of milk-based or foam-based cleansers are suitable for sensitive skin since they are gentler on skin
  5. Foam-based cleansers help to keep the pores clean. Deep clean the face by applying the foam on all the oily areas of the face.
  6. Wash it off with lukewarm water

Our Picks of Cleansers

  1. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
  2. Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser For Normal To Oily Skin
  3. Lotus Herbals Whiteglow 3-in-1 Deep Cleansing Skin Whitening Facial Foam

Facial Step 2: Exfoliate

This is the next important step that should not be skipped. Exfoliation helps in removing dead cells from the surface of your skin. The top layer holds a lot of debris and oil and that is removed by exfoliation. It also makes your skin soft and supple.

Another benefit of exfoliation is it helps the ingredients penetrate your skin to achieve maximum benefits of the facial. There are two ways of exfoliation: Physical or chemical-based exfoliation. You can go either way.

  1. Physical Exfoliation uses products like facial scrubs, sponges, loofahs, etc. In this type of exfoliation, the loose dead skin cells of the topmost layer of your skin are removed using physical friction.
  2. Chemical Exfoliation work by breaking the bond between skin cells so that the dead skins are loosened. This is achieved using acids like lactic acid or glycolic acid. The most common chemical exfoliants are AHAs(Alpha hydroxy acids), BHAs(Beta Hydroxy Acids), and fruit enzymes.

We recommend you use both physical and chemical exfoliation for maximum results.

How to Exfoliate

  1. Start with an acid based exfoliator depending on your skin type .Dab a little on your fingers and apply in small gentle circular motions.
  2. If the exfoliant is a chemical peel, follow the directions mentioned on the package.
  3. Let is sit for a while (again check the instructions for how long to sit).
  4. Rinse off with water
  5. Follow this with physical scrubbing to make sure all the dead skin cells are removed.

Note: You may do either one depending on your skin type.

Our Picks of Exfoliators

  1. Everyuth Naturals Exfoliating Walnut Scrub
  2. Khadi Mauri Herbal Apricot Face Scrub Dead Skin Remover
  3. Minimalist AHA 25% + PHA 5% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution for Glowing Skin, Smooth Texture & Pore Cleansing | Weekend Facial Exfoliant or Peel

Facial Step 3: Steam

Now that you have soft and dead cells-free skin, the next step is to steam. You can use an at-home steamer to do this. If you do not have a steamer at home, you can simply bring a pot of water to boil and cover your shoulders, head, and the bowl with a towel so that the steam reaches your face. Additionally, you can also add a few drops of essential oil to the water.

Make sure that you are not very close to the boiling pot of water to avoid injuries.

Steaming has some wonderful benefits which include opening the pores so that the blackheads on your nose and chin melt a little. This will help the extraction of the blackheads and whiteheads easier.

Steaming also increases blood circulation due to the moisture from steam.

Note: Do not steam for more than 10 minutes.

Our Picks of Steamers

  1. Sahyog Wellness 3 In 1 Steam Vaporizer
  2. Healthgenie Steam Sauna Vaporizer Facial Steamer

Facial Step 4: Remove Blackheads

This is the most painful part of a facial. Personally, I hate this step but it is important to get rid of the blackheads and non-inflamed blemishes by extracting them using a comedone extractor.

During this process, the thick debris made of dead skin cells and oil is carefully pushed up and out of the pore. This leaves behind soft skin.

Our Picks of Blackhead Removers

  1. Beauté Secrets Stainless Steel Anti-Slid Handle Blackhead Remover Tools Kit with Case, Pack of 5
  2. TJSellers Stainless Steel Blackhead Needle/Loop Blackhead Extractor

Note: You may skip this step because if not done correctly, you may get bruises.

Facial Step 5: Mask

This is the most fun step in a facial. Since your pores are open now, it is time for treatment. A treatment mask helps to nourish your skin with all its ingredients.

There are different types of masks in the market:

  1. Gel Masks
  2. Sheet Masks
  3. Clay Masks
  4. Cream Masks

Choose one that meets your requirements and skin concerns.

Never leave your mask for more than 20 minutes. Remove it with a damp cloth so that all the goodness of the mask is soaked into your skin.

Our Picks of Masks

  1. The Face Shop Real Nature Glowing Bride Masksheet Combo (Pack Of 10)
  2. Garnier Skin Naturals, Fresh Mix Vitamin C, Face Serum Sheet Mask (Orange)
  3. Mamaearth Vitamin C Face Mask With Vitamin C & Kaolin Clay for Skin Illumination – 100 g
  4. Aztec Secret Pure Indian Healing Clay Facial Deep Pore Cleansing Bentonite Mask

Facial Step 6: Serums

Serums are great for targeted skin concerns. Say your main goal is to defy aging and slow down the aging process, then opt for an anti-aging serum consisting of active ingredients like antioxidants, retinol, niacinamide, etc.

If you are suffering from pigmentation, then go for a serum with Vitamin C

If you are suffering from acne, go for a serum that has anti-bacterial properties like tea-tree or turmeric

As for wrinkles, opt for serums with retinol.

Check out the best anti-aging creams that work like magic according to dermatologists here.

Our Picks of Serums

  1. WOW Skin Science Vitamin C Serum
  2. L’Oréal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum
  3. Biotique Bio Dandelion Visibly Ageless Serum

Facial Step 7: Moisturize and Massage

This is the final step. Apply a moisturizer that suits your skin type. Moisturizer’s main purpose is to keep your skin hydrated and smooth and to lock in the results of the facial.

Depending on your skin type, opt for a lightweight lotion or a heavy cream.

How to apply moisturizer

  1. Squeeze a pea-sized amount onto your palm.
  2. Rub it with both your palms and start with applying it to cheeks
  3. Using small circular motions, apply the moisturizer on the cheeks, then go to your forehead and then the rest of the face.
  4. Without using much pressure, apply the moisturizer on your neck in upward motion gently lifting the face.

Our Picks of Moisturizer

  1. NIVEA Soft, Light Moisturising Cream, 300ml
  2. Lakme Peach Milk Soft Crème (Cream)
  3. Plum Green Tea Mattifying Moisturizer | For Oily, Acne-Prone Skin | With Green Tea Extracts

Tip: Try to opt for a moisturizer that doesn’t consist of alcohol as it dries your skin quickly.

Takeaway

Now that you have read the steps, you can easily try doing your facial at home. To amplify the whole experience, you can also try improving the ambiance by lighting candles and playing a piece of relaxing music.
